Deleting your Temporary Internet Files in Windows XP

Why would you want to delete your Temporary Internet Files? Temporary Internet Files are downloaded onto your computer whenever a web site is accessed through your web browser. For example, if the web site consists of images, those images are downloaded and stored on your computer. This also applies to text as well. Follow these easy steps below.

Step 1

Close all of your open programs that you may have open.

Step 2

Click on your start button

Step 3

Click on settings

Step 4
Click on control panel. You now should be in the control panel window as shown below. You can now double click on internet options.

Step 5

This will bring you to the internet options window shown below. Click on delete which is circled in red.

Step 6

Once you click delete you will come to a delete browsing window. Click on delete files next to Temporary Internet Files.

Step 7

After you click on the delete button a popup box will appear. Click on YES which will now start the deletion of your Temporary Internet Files. You are done.

Performing a Defrag on your PC

Here is another program you can run to maximize your PC's performance.

Step 1
Click on your start button

Step 2
Click on Programs

Step 3
Click on Accessories

Step 4
Click on System Tools

Step 5
Click on Disk Defragmenter

You should now be in the disk defragmenter window where you will click on Analyze which is circled in red.

Your machine is now being analyzed by disk defragmenter. This process is checking to see if you have any fragmented files that can be condensed into one volume so your hard drive can look up the information quickly.

Once defrag is done analyzing you will see a popup box that will let you know if your hard drive needs defraging. See picture below. In my case I do not need to defrag my hard drive. If you need to defrag it will say it is recommended that you defrag in which case you will click on the defragment button. This process will depend on how fragmented your hard drive is. When the process is done you should restart your computer. You are done.

If your Windows XP PC is running slow here are a few things to check

If your PC is running slow these are a few things you can check to speed it up. I have had good success with checking these particular settings.

One of the first things you can check is what's called MSCONFIG. MSCONFIG can be used to ensure that your computer boots faster and crashes less. I will walk you through navigating to checking your MSCONFIG settings.

Step 1
Click on your start button and then click on run.

Step 2
Type msconfig in your run line like shown below.

Step 3
You will now be directed to the System Configuration Utility window shown below. The tab that you are interested in is the startup tab circled in red.

Step 4
The startup tab displays programs that are automatically loaded every time you turn on your computer on. Some of the programs are neccessary while others are just wasting your PC's memory. If you are unsure of which programs to uncheck you can check out this link http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php which will tell you which programs are neccessary and which programs you should uncheck. If you don't recognize the program then more than likely it should not be running.

Step 5
Click on the OK button.

Once your computer will then have to restart for the settings to take affect. Once your machine boots up it should be faster and hopefully crash less often.

5. On the confirm restore point selection page, click next. system restore restores the previous Windows XP configuration, and then restarts the computer.
